KUALA LUMPUR:
A government backbencher has urged the police and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) to conduct a thorough investigation into the death of prisoner Faizal Abdullah on June 20.

Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) said the case raised serious questions and must be investigated in a transparent and independent manner.

“It has to be determined whether there were elements of foul play or misconduct,” he said while debating Suhakam’s 2024 annual report in the Dewan Rakyat.

The 28-year-old died from unknown causes on June 20, just two weeks after being sent back to Seremban prison from Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital in Seremban.

His sister, Rafeya Abdullah, 30, said the family did not know what treatment her brother had received in prison, why he was sent back to prison on June 4, and where he had died on June 20.

“We just want to know what really happened. Did he die in prison, on the way to hospital, or at the hospital?” Rafeya told FMT on June 29.

She also showed FMT Faizal’s death certificate, which stated that he died of “unascertained” causes.

Faizal had become seriously ill while waiting for the chemist’s report in a drug case. He was charged with three drug-related offences involving cannabis and methamphetamine on Feb 6. - FMT
