Sabah MP calls for Refugees Act; good response to diesel quota hike - PM

Refugees

  • Wilfred Madius Tangau (GRS-Tuaran) today suggested the government legislate a Refugees Act that can comprehensively address the issue of refugees in Malaysia.

In debating a Suhakam annual report at the Dewan Rakyat, he also called on Parliament to set up a parliamentary select committee on refugees and stateless people, to conduct a thorough study on the issue.

Wilfred (above) said the new law should have clear provisions on the status of refugees in Malaysia, the documentation process, their rights and responsibilities to the country, the powers of the federal and state governments on refugees, and mechanisms for their management, education, and health, among others.

“The time has come for Malaysia to move beyond a purely administrative approach towards a clear, transparent, and comprehensive policy and legal framework,” he said.

  • “The refugee issue is no longer a temporary one; it has become a reality that we have lived with for more than 50 years.

Diesel subsidy

  • Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim (Harapan-Tambun) said the decision to extend the monthly quota for specific diesel vehicle owners has received a good response, with 200,000 recipients for the additional 100-litre limit as of July 6.

In response to a question from Howard Lee (Harapan-Ipoh Timor), Anwar told the Dewan Rakyat that the decision to increase the quota came following feedback from SMEs.

Lee earlier questioned the premier on the government’s awareness of the challenges faced by SME owners in securing funds to maintain their businesses. - Mkini
