Lai Kae Bin was among three people charged with voluntarily causing grevious hurt to a customer in Kepong on May 7.
Justice Nurulhuda Nuraini Nor allowed the bail application by Lai Kae Bin, 33, after hearing submissions from the defence and prosecution.
The court set bail at RM20,000 with one surety and ordered Lai to surrender his passport until the disposal of the case. He must also report to the Kepong police station once a week and stay away from the victim and all witnesses in the case.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Haslida Ismail objected to the bail application, urging the court to take into consideration the seriousness of the case, which resulted in injuries to the victim.
Haslida also submitted that the victim had been traumatised by the incident, and raised the possibility of Lai absconding.
Lai’s lawyer, Firdaus Jumaludin, said his client’s father had recently died, and there was no flight risk as Lai needed to care for his ailing mother.
Firdaus also said Lai’s involvement in the incident was minimal.
“He’s not even the one who started the incident, and he did try to call it off,” he said.
After considering the submissions, the judge allowed Lai’s bail application.
The prosecution proposed bail of RM30,000, while the defence urged the court to reduce the amount.
On May 14, Lai and two others – Wong Weng Luen and Wan Ken Fei – were charged in the sessions court with voluntarily causing grievous hurt to Andrew Teh, 47, using dangerous weapons or means.
They were alleged to have committed the offence at Restoran Hing Kee Bak Kut Teh on Jalan Kepong at about 2am on May 7.
The court did not grant them bail.
In August, the sessions court ordered Wong to undergo a psychiatric assessment at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta after allowing his application for the assessment, while Wan failed to convince the High Court to overturn the sessions court’s decision to deny him bail. - FMT
