United States Geological Survey (USGS) has put the 4.38pm (Malaysian time) earthquake off Aceh at 8.9 magnitude, 431km southwest of Banda Aceh.
The epicentre was about 962km west of Kuala Lumpur and tremors were reportedly felt, among others, in Subang Jaya, Penang and Alor Setar.
US monitors have issued an Indian Ocean tsunami warning following the massive quake.
