'Paid holiday' during MRT construction

Jalan Sultan residents of Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown who have agreed to the government compensation package will get a "paid holiday" during the construction of the mass rapid transit (MRT) project below their properties, as they will be fully compensated for any loss in business.

"They will have to vacate their properties for six months. But compensation will be paid fully, as if they are still carrying out their businesses every day.
NONE"Their revenue is guaranteed, it is like a paid holiday," Deputy Finance Minister Awang Adek Hussin (right) told the Dewan Rakyat today during Question Time today.

Out of the 23 property owners in the affected area, Awang Adek said, only two were still holding out, while the rest have already consented to the government compensation package.

He said the matter of temporary evacuation of the premises on Jalan Sultan was being handled by the government through careful negotiations.

"All these are given due consideration so that the rakyat will not suffer any losses," the deputy minister said in reply to a question from Ismail Kassim (BN-Arau).

The Jalan Sultan residents and the government together with the agency in charge of the public transport project, MRT Corp, have been in an imbroglio over the 120-year-old private properties on the road, with both sides disputing the terms of the solutions proposed.
