UTHM investigating 'blackout' at college residences

The Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) administration in Batu Pahat, Johor is investigating the blackout at two college residences which allegedly was done to force students to attend a political talk by a deputy minister.

UTHM assistant vice-chancellor Prof Amir Hashim Mohd Kassim said the administration will investigate the incident which happened at the Tun Fatimah and Tun Dr Ismail residences.

“I do not deny that the lights went off. I do not know who shut off the power and whether it was the students or my officers. But we will investigate who shut it off,” he told Malaysiakini.

Yesterday, a Pro-Mahasiswa spokesperson claimed that the electrical supply to the two residences was shut off, forcing them to attend the talk which was supposed to be about the International Youth Day celebrations.

NONEInstead, the talk given by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Ahmad Maslan (right), was more of a one-hour political talk.

Amir Hashim also said that the scheduled disciplinary proceeding on three students today, who opposed the talk by making a video and putting it up onYouTube, has been shelved to a date yet to be determined.

The disciplinary proceeding, said Amir Hisham, was postponed as one of the panel members could not attend today.
“We postponed the proceedings today because there isn’t enough quorum. We will decide the date later,” he said.
The three students - Muhammad Saiful Farhan Mohamad Razi, Mohd Hidayatullah Masjud and Ahmad Adam Samsudin - were charged by the disciplinary committee with making a video presentation in protest at the political talk, without the consent of the vice-chancellor Prof Dr Noh Dalimin.

According to Amir, the panel will be chaired by two representatives from the mechanical and manufacturing faculty and another from the technology management, business and entrepreneurship faculty.

Amir admitted that the university had invited, Ahmad Maslan who is also Umno information chief, to speak at the university but stressed that his speech which was political in nature was outside their control.

He added that Ahmad Maslan had been informed by university officers to speak on “academic excellency”.

“We don’t know… when politicians speak we cannot control them so from the students’ point of view, it had created a different perception,” he said, adding that the university had no intention of forcing students to attend the programme.
