TAWAU: The congestion issue at the ferry terminal here will be resolved once the new ferry terminal costing RM50 million is ready by April next year.
Sabah Federal Secretary, Dato Abu Bakar Hassan said the construction began in August 2010 and it would be able accommodate eight ferries and eight small boats at a time.
The new terminal would also house the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) office for the convenience of local and foreign visitors, including tourists.
He said this after attending a briefing on the project at the CIQ Barter Trade here, Tuesday.
Currently, passengers have to be careful not to drop into the water when boarding or disembarking the vessels with their goods.
There had been criticisms over the delay in completing the new terminal despite the facility having been promised by former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Badawi.
The Indonesian authorities, in particular, lamented that their nationals were subjected to grave danger and had honoured their part of the agreement four years ago by having their new terminal ready for use in Nunukan.
Abu Bakar hoped the new terminal would increase the cooperation among agencies involved in their effort to solve current issues in the main entry to the country, such as concerning security and smuggling.
Earlier in the briefing, the Immigration Control Post Chief at the old terminal, Norizuana Ridwan, said the number of tourists from neighbouring countries who entered through the CIQ averaged about 800 a day.
According to him, based on statistics, tourists and workers who entered Tawau through the CIQ from January to August this year numbered 151,849 people, while the number of those going out totaled 120,980.
Last year, 217, 453 entered Tawau while a total of 165,857 people went out of Tawau.
Meanwhile, Tawau Customs Chief, Yunos Tahir in the briefing said they have confiscated numerous types of controlled items through the CIQ scanning machine such as 2,070 kg of sugar and 735.5kg of cooking oil since January. (DE)
