GEORGETOWN - Datuk Eddy Choong, who sensationally won the All England Badminton Championships four times in the 1950s, died in Penang yesterday. He was 83.
Standing at a mere 5 ft 4 inches, Choong was a sporting dynamite who clinched the All England singles title in 1953, 1954, 1956 and 1957.
He was also a finalist in 1952 and 1955, and won the doubles titles from 1951 to 1953, teaming up with his brother David, who died in 2011. Choong was also a member of the victorious 1955 Malayan Thomas Cup team and the 1958 team which lost to Indonesia.
He was inducted into the Badminton Hall of Fame in 1997. According to his family, he was admitted to the hospital three days ago after vomiting, but died at 3pm yesterday.
