Cops: Legal aid group told of Nagarajan's arrest

The Kuala Lumpur police have insisted that they had informed the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK by its Malay acronym) of detainee K Nagarajan's death, although the Bar Council has claimed otherwise.

"According to our records, the YBGK was officially informed of the arrest via email and fax on Dec 21, 2012 at 15.45 hours. The Bar Council’s claim is inaccurate,” CID department head Khoo Chin Wah said in a press release yesterday.

Khoo said police records state that, between April 1, 2012 and the end of the year, the police had informed YBGK of 4,039 arrests.

He was responding to a statement issued by Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee on Jan 2, stating that Nagarajan's family and the YBGK had not been informed of the arrest.

However, Khoo made made no mention of the claim that the family members were not informed.

Nagarajan was found dead at the Dang Wangi district police detention centre on Dec 24 before he was to be brought before a magistrate.

Family members were told that he had died as a result of a fall, but do not believe this.

The Cheras police have said they will seek an inquest as required by law, after obtaining the autopsy report. The report has yet to be released.
