Hindus to observe 1Malaysia Thaipusam

Hindus in Kota Kinabalu will join those nationwide in observing Thaipusam, the festival of thanksgiving and paying penance, on Jan 27 in line with the 1Malaysia concept, at the Sri Subramaniam Temple KM22 Penampang-Papar Road in Lok Kawi.

Sri Subramaniam temple management president Jayakumar Muniandy said one of the new 1Malaysia elements incorporated into the festival was performances by musical troupes from Kuala Lumpur and Pahang.

He said the festival would also include 'kavadi' bearers, among them three people of mixed Indian-Kadazandusun parentage in a procession from the Meruntum waterfront to the temple in Lok Kawi.

"We decided to add value to the Thaipusam programme this year, in line with the spirit of 1Malaysia concept mooted by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak," he told Bernama today.

"Most of the 'kavadi' bearers fast for 30 days beforehand," he said, adding that more than 1,000 people were expected to turn up for the festival.

Thaipusam is celebrated by Hindus around the world on the full moon day in the month of "Thai" in the Tamil calendar, which usually falls in January or February, he said.
