Tumeric murder:3 eyewitnesses but cops say not enough evidence

Tumeric murder:3 eyewitnesses but cops say not enough evidence
KUALA LUMPUR - There is not enough evidence to launch a murder investigation into the death of security guard C. Sugumaran, police said today.
Selangor deputy police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan also asked eyewitnesses who allegedly saw policemen and a mob beating the 39-year-old to death last Wednesday to come forward.
“You have said that the family has got the evidence. Such evidence if they have, then they should provide them to the police and assist in their investigations,” Thaiveegan told The Malaysian Insider today via a text message.
“It’s only proper that the family to (sic) communicate with the police directly. An inquest is provided for under the law and the police will comply with the provisions of the law,” he added.
Sugumaran’s family has rejected the police’s suggestion that an inquest be held into Sugumaran’s death, demanding instead for a murder investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Sugumaran’s family lawyer N. Surendran also said yesterday that there was clear evidence of murder, pointing out that an inquest was only necessary if there were doubts over the cause of death.
Three eyewitnesses — R. Moohanarajan, 21, S. Sugunan, 35, and R. Vasandh, 16 — told The Malaysian Insiderlast Thursday that policemen had handcuffed Sugumaran before allegedly assaulting him fatally together with a mob of more than 20 near his house in Batu 12, Hulu Langat last Wednesday.
Moohanarajan said that the policemen had also thrown turmeric powder into Sugumaran’s face and stepped on the latter’s neck.
But last Thursday, Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab denied that the police had assaulted the security guard to death, citing Serdang Hospital’s first post-mortem on Sugumaran which showed that the man had died of a heart attack.
According to the police’s version of events, the Batu 14 Hulu Langat police station had received a call at about 6.30pm last Wednesday from a man saying that Sugumaran had run amok and was destroying public property.
Abdul Rashid said three policemen in a patrol car and a motorcycle tailed Sugumaran, who was on foot, for about two kilometres from Dusun Sri Nanding to Taman Lagenda Suria in Hulu Langat as the latter waved a metal rod, destroying flower vases near houses and electrical wires, until he fell down in the middle of the road.
Abdul Rashid said that the police had merely handcuffed Sugumaran, with the assistance of some 10 members of the public, as the latter had resisted arrest, and stressed that no one had assaulted the security guard.
Surendran said yesterday that the police have yet to agree to a second post-mortem on Sugumaran’s body despite protests from the family.
Surendran, who is also a PKR vice-president, added that the family would proceed with a protest at the Bukit Aman federal headquarters tomorrow.
