Water crisis is over, declares SYABAS
KUALA LUMPUR - Some half a million residents in the Klang Valley who were affected by water disruptions over the past two weeks had their supply restored today.
Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor executive director (technical development) V. Subramaniam said all affected areas in Gombak and 95% of areas in Kuala Lumpur had supply restored while the remaining areas will be fully connected tomorrow.
"The installation of a bypass system was completed on Monday morning, a day ahead of schedule. Additional supply of treated water was channelled by using the bypass system for distribution to all affected areas," he told a press conference today.
However, Subramaniam said the problems might have been resolved sooner had the Selangor government agreed to Syabas' proposal for the Langat 2 project or an additional pump house at Wangsa Maju.
He refuted Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim's statement that the company submitted the application for a new pumping system last November, and said Syabas had submitted it in Januray 2010 and only received a response in March last year.
"The bypass would not have been necessary if the Langat 2 project was implemented on time or the additional pumping system that the state government agreed to develop in March last year was implemented," he said.
Meanwhile, Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin called for a better coordinated mitigation plan among state authorities, water operators and federal agencies in case of future water shortages.
"We cannot fight one another in times like this. There needs to be an alignment of work progress among all parties so that it does not cause too much hardship to the people," he told a press conference.
Selangor residents have faced water disruptions or intermittent supply since Dec 29 due to a series of malfunctioning water equipment.
