LOW IQ OR LYING? Shooting cases will not have negative impact on tourism - Yen Yen
GEORGE TOWN: The tourism industry has not suffered loss of tourists due to the recent shooting cases in the country.
Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said there was currently no data to show that tourists were having reservations about visiting the country due to safety concerns.
She said although the recent incidents had raised some concerns within the Tourism and Culture Ministry, they were not stopping tourists from coming to Malaysia.
"Malaysia has gone for many overseas dialogues and our safety and security has never been raised as an issue.
"Anyway, no country in the world is a hundred per cent safe," she said after launching the 2013 1Malaysia Contemporary Art Tourism Festival's George Town Art Trail here this morning.
Dr Ng, who was formerly Tourism Minister, said the police must find the cause of the violent crime and urged all citizens to play their part in crime fighting and prevention.
She also admitted that there had been a number of snatch theft cases involving tourists in Malaysia and that she personally felt that the culprits should face harsher punishments to curb the crime.
"We have the laws but now we have to strengthen the enforcement," she said.
