Malay council against screening 'The New Village'

The Malay Consultative Council (MPM) is against screening of the film 'The New Village' to the public, spread via the social media or distributed in CD format.
Secretary-general Hasan Mad said today, the 'The New Village' could not be classified as a fiction film because it contains historical facts that are misleading.

"It (The New Village) will anger the Malays who sacrificed so much. Large tracts of Malay reserve land were forcibly given to the British army to build new villages to resettle the communist sympathisers," he said in a statement.

The 65 MPM representatives who watched 'The New Village' on August 6 had different opinion but all agreed that the film has hidden message.

Hasan said it the film could indirectly influence the people's perception especially among those unfamiliar with the actual historical facts.

The MPM representatives also found that nothing was mentioned whether 'The New Village' is a fiction film or based on a true story.

'The New Village' shows elements of heroism among the communists and has confusing dialogue.

On July 28, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said 'The New Village' slated for screening on August 22 was postponed to enable the Film Censorship Board to study its contents including the plot and message.
