Najib's stand on EO a slap to Zahid

Najib's stand on EO a slap to Zahid
Home minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s insistence on ressurecting the Emergency Ordinance to fight crime has puzzled PAS following the position by prime minister Najib Razak and inspector general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.

Party information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man described statements by Najib and Khalid as a slap to Zahid, who has been pushing to revive EO to address the mysterious spike in violent crimes recently.

“Firstly, the IGP proved Zahid wrong for supporting EO as solution to crime and (he) also alerted the people the existence of Crime Prevention Act that allows detention up to 72 days with court order.

"Secondly, Najib has proved that the cabinet has rejected Zahid’s recommendation to bring back EO,” said Tuan Ibrahim.

Khalid had revealed that police used the Crime Prevention Act 1959 (Amended 1983) which enables it detain suspects for up to 72 days on court order, while Najib assured that his administration would not resort to new laws restricting liberties when combating crimes.

The stand, said Tuan Ibrahim, further undermined public confidence in Zahid, whose short tenure as Home minister has seen an alarming rise in gun-related crimes nationwide.

“The most pertinent question is what’s Zahid’s motive to push for EO?" he asked, and wondered whether Zahid was campaigning for the upcoming UMNO polls to defend his vice president post.

Commending the police’s recent effort in detaining 200 suspects, the Pahang PAS commissioner however said crime prevention must not be a seasonal affair.

He also expressed support to former Chief Justice Zaki Azmi’s suggestion for the Crime Prevention Act to empower police in battling crime.

But he warned:

“The law must not be used against innocents and for political purposes."
