Questions raised over 1.4mil new Bangladeshi workers

PAS has expressed concerned over the announcement that an additional 1.4 million Bangladeshi workers will come to Malaysia next year, fearing that they could later become citizens.

The party also questions what these workers will be employed as and whether the influx could contribute to crime.

pas muktamar 130610 tuan ibrahim tuan man"Considering the influx of migrant workers is already out of control, does the government know how to ensure that the workers won't disappear after their contract ends?" PAS information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man asked.

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had on Thursday announced that 1.4 million extra Bangladeshi workers will enter Malaysia next year and be given special identity cards.

Bernama reported that the special identity cards would have Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and biometric technology, and would function as a debit card and stored-value card (such as Touch & Go).

"The cards would be colour coordinated to indicate different employment sectors to prevent the workers from switching jobs," he reportedly said.

The 1.4 million will be on top of the half-a-million Bangladeshi workers already in Malaysia, as estimated by the Bangladesh High Commission.

Commenting on the special identity cards, Tuan Ibrahim also raised concern over the integrity of the cards, and whether they can be used to register these Bangladeshis onto the electoral roll.

"There have previously been cases where even temporary identity cards (green MyKas cards) or temporary resident cards (red MyPR cards) were used to register voters.

"Can the government guarantee that (the Bangladeshis) will not be given blue identity cards and register as voters?" he asked.

And will they turn into Malays?

He added that as Bangladeshis are Muslims, there is little to stop them from marrying the majority local population of Malays and being "Malay-nised" as bumiputera citizens.
This, he said, could see locals compete economically and socially with foreigners.

bangladesh foreign workers migrants 030108"Malaysians, especially the bumiputera and Malays, must be aware of this issue. We have seen many examples where foreigners who convert to Islam or those who are already Muslim take advantage of this to claim rights as bumiputera Malaysians...

"The government must solve unemployment issues first. Don't trade in national sovereignty for cheap labour...
"Or is this a ploy for certain quarters to profit from commissions from bringing in the Bangladeshi labour?" he asked.
