Utusan derides DBKL's 'Chinese food hub' plans

Utusan Malaysia has objected to Kuala Lumpur City Hall's (DBKL) plans to turn Jalan Alor in Kuala Lumpur into a Chinese food hub of international standards on racial grounds.

The daily, through an editorial  in its Sunday edition Mingguan Malaysia, believes that the RM2 million project would only benefit one race.

"Why not establish a food hub for all races? Kuala Lumpur is not owned by just one race.

"The authorities should begin a Malay food hub first if it wants to have such a concept in the capital," read the editorial.

Author Awang Selamat, believed to be a pseudonym for Utusan'stop editors, said Malaysia is a multiracial country where Malays and bumiputeras form the core and thus it was appropriate for NGOs to object against this project.
Bukit Bintang is like Hong Kong
He wrote that mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib's explanation about the project, that it was an attempt to give Jalan Alor a facelift to attract tourist, was not convincing.

"Regardless, DBKL should be more sensitive. There is already a strong Chinese image in the Bukit Bintang area, as though it is modelled after Hong Kong.

"Bukit Bintang is also seeing rapid development. Other areas in Kuala Lumpur should see similar development, especially areas which are neglected.

"Moreover, voters in that area have never supported the federal government. Even if they are given the moon and the stars, they will not appreciate it," read the editorial.

In July, Ahmad Phesal announced that the 'Jalan Alor Night Food Paradise' project which will begin in October and is expected to be completed in about 11 month.

"We will also provide quality furniture including an efficient waste disposal and water system to the merchants as to preserve the area's hygiene," he said.
