Zahid says SUPP not spared, but keeps mum on Umno

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today that the Registrar Of Societies (ROS) is taking due action against the Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP)for alleged irregularities at its 2011 delegates conference.

However, he ignored a question on why ROS did not act swiftly against Umno as well when the nation's leading partywas declared an illegal organisation by the courts in 1997.

NONEZahid (right) was asked by reporters to explain the government's swift action against DAP after the alleged irregularities during its party polls last December, compared withSUPP and Umno, both part of the ruling coalition.

"How do you know there's no action against SUPP? (Taking action) One by one," he told reporters in a one-liner response to the question, without touching on Umno.

SUPP had replied to a show cause ROS letter and is currently awaiting its decision regarding the status of two of its branches, both in Miri.

ROS had instructed DAP to re-elect its central executive committee (CEC), an order that DAP agreed to despite protesting its legality.

DAP had said that it was obeying the directive in order to save theparty from possible de-registration.
