Cabinet ministers dominate supreme council race

The race for Umno supreme council seats looks to conclude with a largely familiar line-up today with cabinet ministers and deputy ministers garnering the highest number of votes to make the top 25.

Among the top five are International Trade and Industries Minister Mustapa Mohamed, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom, Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Education Minister II Idris Jusoh, according to the unofficial results released by Bernama at 2am.

All of them are incumbent supreme council members.

The results were not surprising given the Umno grassroots' tendency to maintain the status quo in this party polls, which saw 62 candidates vying for 25 seats in the powerful body.

Plus, the popularity and the resources of the ministers, all of whom have been in the cabinet for more than one term, had made them easy shoo-ins to fill up the supreme council positions.

NONEThe most notable change comes in the form of former deputy higher education minister Saifuddin Abdullah (left), often seen as "the voice of reason" within Umno, who failed to retain his post.

Even Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed, vying for the position for the first time, failed to make the cut. Another notable who failed to defend his post is former federal territories and urban wellbeing minister Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

However, Azalina Othman, the Pengerang MP, who backed out from challenging Shahrizat Abdul Jalil for the Umno Wanita chief position, looks to have made it into the team, along with former Puteri chief and current Deputy Transport Minister Rosnah Shirlin.
Controversial Kinabatangan parliamentarian Bung Mokhtar Radin remained in the lineup with two other Sabahans - Rosnah and Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan.
Umno Youth leader Razali Ibrahim is also placed in the top 15.

The top 25 at 2am are:

1.  Mustapa Mohamed - 168 votes
