Gov't says The Herald seizure only for 'inspection'

The Home Ministry has defended the seizure of Christian publicationThe Herald, claiming that it did so only to ensure that the word 'Allah' was not used in the latest issue.

The ministry said that this is in line with the recent Court of Appealdecision which said that the weekly is not allowed to use the word.

"However the publications were released for circulation today, Oct 27, after the inspection found that the word 'Allah' was not used in the issue," the ministry said on its official Facebook page this morning.

It added that only 53 copies were seized last Friday by the ministry's Al-Quran Text and Publication Controls Department.

However, it was earlier reported that 2,000 copies of the Roman Catholic Church's publication was seized on that day at the Kota Kinabalu Airport.

It was reported that the copies were prevented from entering Sabah by officials in Putrajaya.

The seizure was slammed by Sabah and Sarawak politicians on both side of the divide.

It came after repeated assurance by the government that Christians in those states, who mostly worship in Bahasa Malaysia, can use the word 'Allah'.
