Reports of money politics and abuse of power submitted to the Umno disciplinary board since the May 5 general election are "mostly lies", the board's chairperson Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas said today.
He was quoted by national news agency Bernama as saying that reports of "actual impropreties are very few", while also saying that allegations of money politics need strong evidence."Anyone can talk, but we need proof.
"If the witness is not credible, he could be easily swayed by the lawyers and there'll be no conviction," he reportedly said.
Megat Najmuddin (left) said that if there are any elements of crime and corruption, Umno would submit reports to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
"Our methods are not as stringent as the authorities. We're a political party, not a court. We understand the agenda behind such accusations, which are mostly to destroy a person's reputation," he said.
He added that there are no serious incidences of money politics and most of the reports were "intentionally blown out of proportion by political blogs".
Yesterday, former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitted that money talks during Umno polls.
"Corruption is widespread. It is tiring because lots of money go down to the ground.
"If the money doesn't go down, then (you) won't get elected," Mahathir said.
