Penang BN chief Teng Chang Yeow has strongly condemned an angry mob’s intrusion into the state assembly building yesterday.
In a text message to Malaysiakini, he said that such behaviour is "unacceptable in our democratic society".
"I have spoken to state chief police officer Abdul Rahim Hanafi and urged him to take swift and stern action against those intruders," Teng (left) added.
The police have detained 12 men between the ages of 25 and 35 believed to be involved in the incident. They will be probed under the Penal Code for trespassing.
"I have also conveyed my disapproval to state Umno chief Zainal Abidin Osman over the failure of the state Umno Youth in controlling the demonstration which ended with the intrusion," he added.
The intruders, who barged into the Penang state assembly yesterday, comprised members from Umno Youth, Perkasa and NGOs like the Federation of Peninsula Malay Students.
Komtar Traders Association vice-president Abdul Ghani Mohd Jiman, a vocal critic of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, was among the 12 who entered the hall looking for DAP Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer.
Teng said while he understood their anger over Rayer's remark in the assembly, they must also understand that this country is governed by laws and regulations.
Rayer had allegedly insulted the Malays when he uttered the words "Umno celaka" directing it at Kepala Batas MP Reezal Merican Naina Merican and two other Umno leaders.
The DAP rep had lashed out at the Umno MPs for joining a rally in Seberang Jaya in January which displayed banners blaming DAP for the May 13 incident.
Commenting further, Teng said being provoked doesn't give the right or license to intrude.
On the same note, he urged speaker Law Choo Kiang to exercise his authority by forbidding members of the House from uttering words that could incite hatred and provoke ill feeling amongst races in the country.
"DAP must also be reminded that if they don't condone such actions, they should also prohibit the promotion of such actions by their publicity chief Hew Kuan Yew," he added.
Teng was referring to Hew's recent posting in Facebook, urging Malaysians to emulate Taiwanese undergraduates in occupying the Taiwan Legislature.
'Rayer has gone overboard'
Yesterday, Zainal Abidin said the party is “angry, disappointed and very dissatisfied with Rayer’s use of the offensive word ‘celaka’ in the state assembly on May 20.
“He has gone overboard, he is ill-mannered, rude and such words should not be uttered by an assemblyperson or a lawyer,” he said, referring to Rayer’s legal profession.
“His behaviour has tarnished his position as a lawmaker and someone who should be practising law,” Zainal added.
“Although assemblypersons have immunity for words uttered in the state assembly, this privilege should not be used to insult others with abusive words, especially to those leaders who are not in the Dewan to defend themselves,” he stressed.
Zainal Abidin (right) said Rayer should realise that his behaviour would attract a response from Umno leaders and members.
He urged Rayer not to use the state assembly to campaign for DAP which is facing two by-elections - Bukit Gelugor and Teluk Intan, which goes to polls on Sunday, May 25 and May 31, respectively.
“Raise issues which benefit the state and people of Penang instead of being dramatic to seek political popularity,” he said.
“Be more sensitive to others. Rayer appears to be insincere in wanting to protect the good relationship between Penangites, he only seems to be trapped in his bad habit of raising Umno’s anger and attracting their response,” he added.
