YOURSAY ‘It’s ironic that the boycott is at the expanse of our own Muslims.’
'McD's staff shunned, children singled out'
Aries46: McDonald’s (McD’s) managing director Stephen Chew is right that the protesters are hurting their own brothers and sisters to vent their anger at happenings in far off Gaza.
Considering that 85 percent of the 12,000 employees are Muslims, it is ironic that the boycott aimed at defending the Muslims in Gaza is at the expanse of our own Muslims employees in McDonald's.
This boycott strategy is misplaced in many aspects, most of all its obscure impact levels on its targeted victims - Israel/United States. But its effect on the local franchisees, its agents and employees are evident, immediate and specific.
Another troubling aspect of this debacle is the stand adopted by leaders of Umno-BN who thus far have remained in the shadows more or less providing the impetus for the irrational and overzealous actions by some emotional protesters.
Unless the leaders are forthright and prepared to rein in these miscreants, McDonald's and its employees are consigned as nothing more than Umno-BN's sacrificial lamb for its symbolic act of unity with Gaza.
Malaccan: It is sad that the Gaza conflict has turned many Malaysians into incoherent angry people. Those promoting or participating in boycotts over Gaza have little or no idea why they are doing it beyond someone saying there is a link between Israel and the companies.
They have no understanding of business structures and are duped by equally ignorant promoters or by sly operators for unseen purposes.
The worse part is that they demonise everyday Malaysians who are trying to eke out a living in difficult times and feeding their families. Are the Gazans any better for it?
Even a federal minister has jumped into the fray objecting to a bank's actions without understanding if it was made against possible terror activities.
These boycotts and protests are led by questionable promoters which turn the people off such causes in the end.
Perhaps this is what the objective is. Demonise protests so that other legitimate protests will later be shunned too. Let's support Gaza intelligently.
Jaded: This is nothing more than mob mentality which is being manipulated by certain forces for their own benefit. Destroying our own people and private property over a war in another land is pure stupidity.
Not that the Palestinians are not suffering, but surely there are better ways to protest.
Anonymous_3e86: Who really loses from this boycott and intimidation? Fellow Malaysians, especially McDonald's Muslim employees.
The Jews and Israelis don't feel any pain from this boycott. McDonald's chain of outlets in Malaysia is only a small speck compared to the vast number of outlets worldwide.
Anonymous_1407410978: Stupid is as stupid does. Ordinary Malaysians’ livelihood is threatened over a crisis they have no hand in. I have not read of any political parties coming out to support the McD’s employees.
I am still eating my quarter pounder. The biggest supporter of Israel is US. The protestors should ask our government to boycott the US dollar. That would be deadly effective.
Otakechik: Some people are exhibiting stupidity of the highest order. Instead of finding solution, they punished fellow citizens. McDonald’s staff need the job to bring home food... remember that.
Penang Mari-loh: Why be selective? Why only boycott McD’s? Boycott all American manufactured products.
If they're sincere in showing solidarity with the Palestinians, they should stop using all US-manufactured products and goods - phones, tablets, PCs, cigarettes, coffee, milk products, pharma products, motorbikes, cars, planes, etc.
Baiyuensheng: The Umno government is also, in a way, funding the Zionist state. All western companies doing business here pay taxes to their respective governments coffers, especially US, which in term provided annual funding and military equipment to Israel, which in turn are used on Palestinian children and women.
Ban them as well. Stop all from coming to Malaysia.
Swipenter: The terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and The Levant (ISIL or ISIS) are terrorising, killing and burning villages of Shiites, Christians, Yazidis, Kurds and other minorities in northern Iraq and some parts bordering Syria.
Thousands are killed and many more thousands displaced. Others are forced to convert to their faith or face death. Why don't these protestors lift a finger to condemn the ISIS terrorists?
Oh, I forgot that our PM Najib Abdul Razak even praised the ISIS terrorists for their bravery and leadership skills.
Headhunter: Such irrational behaviour is so common place these days in Malaysia. All it needs is for a politician or NGO leader to make some stupid claim and everyone will go into a frenzy.
This is why it is dangerous to let politicians and their sycophants make irrational statements to the public without control.
A large ignorant section of our society is being fed lies by them. Let's collectively help put a stop to them before they become dangerous and destroy our peaceful existence even if the authorities are shutting their eyes. -Mkini
