Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah is only qualified to be the menteri besar for Umno, not the people of Kedah, say party grassroots who question his ability to lead the state government.
Jalan Badlishah Umno branch leader, Anuar Abdul Hamid, said he doubted Ahmad Bashah would be able to win the support of the grassroots, unlike former menteri besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, who was popular among all levels of society.
"At the grassroots level, we are very sceptical. We have no confidence in Ahmad Bashah.
"I am not confident he can win over the grassroots, the villagers, the women, the old and the young.
"This is in contrast to Mukhriz, who appears to be popular among everyone regardless their age. They really like him," said Anuar.
He said another challenge Ahmad Bashah would face was from the young voters, whom he said would determine the outcome of the next election.
"I was informed today that many young Umno voters have cut up their membership cards and posted it on Facebook as a sign of protest.
"This shows that the youth have rejected Ahmad Bashah after what happened in Kedah," said Anuar, adding that he had learned of this from a blogger in the state.
He said Ahmad Bashah's heydays were over and that he doubted the new menteri besar could keep up with the modern times.
Meanwhile, Bandar Laguna Umno branch chief Zahran Abdullah said Ahmad Bashah was behind time and would not appeal to the youth of today.
"He has become the new menteri besar, but the youth do not see him as an idol. He's a relic," said Zahran.
While Zahran did not deny Bashah was an experienced Kedahan politician, he said the Bakar Bata assemblyman was more of a follower than a leader.
However, veteran party activist Ramli Mohd Yunus from Pokok Sena said Bashah had succeeded in leading Kedah Umno to victory after it lost the 2008 general election to PAS.
"In terms of the party, Bashah can lead it because he is used to the ways and culture of Umno.
"I believe he can manage Umno and the coming election, we just need to give him a chance to administer the state first," he said.
Ramli added that Bashah could help unite the party as he knew how to deal with the warlords and wing leaders.
Mukhriz resigned as menteri besar yesterday, ending a two-week-long leadership tussle in the state that began on January 20 when Kedah Umno declared they had lost confidence in his leadership and wanted Najib to intervene.
Ahmad Bashah, who led the press conference against Mukhriz, will be sworn in as menteri besar today.
