Incoming Kedah Menteri Besar Ahmad Bashah Md Hanapiah may have successfully ousted Mukhriz Mahathir for the post but winning the support of the people after the two-week coup will be difficult, an analyst said.
Political analyst Azizuddin Mohd Sani said this is because Kedahans will find it tough to accept a new MB, who came into the position because of politics and not performance.
“It will be hard for people to accept Bashah, but he can win their support if he performs and the rakyat can reap the benefits. Perfomance is key.
“The entire Umno leadership must also go to the ground to calm the situation,” the Universiti Utara Malaysia lecturer told Malaysiakini.
The Kedah political crisis ended today with Mukhriz announcing his resignation, after losing support of the state legislative assembly.
Bashah, who led the coup, will be sworn in as menteri besar tomorrow.
Mukhriz said he rejected Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s offer of a deputy minister's post, adding that he will not be silenced.
The son of former premier and top Najib critic, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said he believes he was pressured out of his post for speaking out on state investment firm 1MDB.
Azizuddin said whether or not the crisis ends here will depend on whether Umno leaders are quick to contain discontent.
“It depends on how the new MB can strengthen Umno and win the people’s support for BN. Otherwise, there is risk of internal sabotage,” he said.
It was earlier reported that 19 Kedah asssemblypersons signed statutory declarations (SD) to say they have lost faith in Mukhriz as MB.
The Regency Council met with 21 BN assemblypersons and 15 opposition assemblypersons to determine Mukhriz’s standing, after speculation that some of the SDs were signed under duress.
Opposition representatives yesterday said they wanted the crisis to be resolved in the state legislative assembly. -Mkini
