YOURSAY | ‘Mahathir should set aside his vendetta and give Anwar unconditional support.’
FellowMalaysian: Spoken by a person who is devoid of hatred, anger and delusion, Anwar Ibrahim in jail has just extended the olive branch to the man who had mercilessly tormented and maimed him and his family since two decades ago.
Anwar's magnanimity and selflessness truly has no bound; in his resolute effort and mission to save the country from being torn asunder and shamelessly raped of its wealth and riches by the very ruling party which ironically launched his political career, Anwar has now reached out to his arch enemy, Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Kim Quek: I am glad that Anwar has been reported correctly by Malaysiakini as calling for a grand alliance that may include Mahathir to unseat the failed premiership of Najib to bring in systemic change – not a specific call to support Mahathir’s move to remove Najib as twisted by some media in their headlines.
Mahathir may have his personal agenda, but the grand alliance must be crystal clear in its objective, which is to remove Najib, followed by sweeping changes to remove the root causes that have brought the country down almost to its knees, so to speak.
We are glad that Anwar’s clarion call at this critical hour has cleared the air and provided the sorely needed leadership to veer the nation from the brink of disaster.
Cocomomo: I hope the people who are still doubtful or sceptical on the urgent need for change will realise how bad the situation is, especially when someone who spent years in jail because of another man has come out to support the efforts of this other man to remove a greater evil.
God have mercy on Malaysia!
Headhunter: Even this simple statement from Anwar shows the quality of his leadership.
Mahathir should put aside his personal vendetta against Anwar and give him unconditional support. After all, hasn't Anwar suffered enough?
The nation is now in dire straits so personal feeling should be put aside. Now it's the time to call for healing.
Behsaikong: In politics, there are no permanent friends nor permanent enemies. The common good must be the supreme goal. No one or side can have all its wishes.
But in the context of what we face in our country today, if long-term enemies can become partners for the sake of country and its people, then let's at least give it a chance.
Political monopoly must be contested and put to an end. If the best known political victim in our country stands ready to close ranks with those who were his principal detractors for the sake of seeking gains for the good of the nation, who are we to pour cold water on this initiative?
If not for this surprising coming together of opponents of old, what hope is there to effectively deal with the political impasse we now have?
For lack of trying until we have a perfect solution or partnership, the present malaise will continue. ‘Sampai bila’ (Until when)?
Anonymous #95676433: People, is it so simple? Just throw out Najib? Then back to square one?
No, we must agree first that the democratic institutions and systems, and checks and balances destroyed by Dr M, must be restored together with a complete review of outdated and abused privileges, etc, which must be abolished so that a just and fair society can be built, with emphasis on meritocracy in all fields so that all Malaysians will benefit.
Anonymous 2402521456737582: Well, it's do-or-die time now. This is really a battle for the Malay heartland.
It's about whether PKR and Umno Team B plus some NGOs can wrest enough Malay support away from Umno. At least one-quarter to one-third.
And that means that in GE14, there will be enough votes for a ‘Barisan Baru’ (i.e. Harapan, a new Malay party, and whoever else joins) to unseat the current BN.
DAP, Amanah and PKR have the urban areas covered. Just hold on to what you have, or increase it slightly. The battle is not in urban areas. Umno has lost those already.
Let DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang and no one else take the lead in setting the "terms and conditions" for DAP. Trust me, Umno will paint this as Mahathir "selling out to the Chinese". Lim has enough sense and experience to manage this.
If this works, then Najib is going to be on the back foot for the next two years. If it doesn't, this country is a goner.
And so are we all.
Bumiputhran: Fellow citizens, place not your hope in the coming GE14. It will not happen as one wishes.
Najib has corrupted every institution to remain in power and nothing will stop him from holding an unfree and unfair election. He will go the extra mile to ensure the election machine, if there is going to be an election, will be used to keep him in power.
Strike now, and not in 2018.
