More than 40 injured in Bangkok boat explosion

A suspected gas-leak explosion onboard a shuttle boat plying Bangkok’s busy canals this morning left more than 40 people injured, including two in serious condition.
An executive with the company operating the shuttle boat, Chavalit Maetayaprapas, said the 6.20 am explosion occurred at Klong Saensaep canal when the boat was packed with about 60 passengers.
“The boat, operated by Krobkrua Khonsong was from Wat Sribunruang pier to Pratunam with 60 passengers when an explosion happened in the engine room,” he told the media today.
The boat was about to approach the Wat Thep Leela pier to pick up and offload passengers when the explosion occurred, forcing passengers onboard to flee to safety.
The injured, including two in serious condition, were dispatched to five nearby hospitals in the capital for treatment, said an official with the local disaster centre.
According to Chavalit, the incident was the first for the company in its 30-year history of running the service.
