Former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir announced today that he would not be following in his father's footsteps in quitting Umno.
Speaking to Malaysiakini in Kuala Lumpur today, Mukhriz said his father, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, understood his decision.
"I talked with Tun (Mahathir) yesterday. He understood the stand Muhyiddin Yassin and I took," Mukhriz said.
Earlier, at a press conference together with Muhyiddin and Umno vice- president Shafie Apdal, Mukhriz said their decision to stay in Umno did not go against Mahathir's decision.
He added he had made the same decision back in 2008
"When my father quit Umno in 2008, I held a press conference saying I would stay with the party," he said.
He said he and Muhyiddin had a duty towards the people as they were both elected Umno leaders.
As for Mahathir's own decision to quit Umno, the former Kedah menteri besar said this was not unusual.
"Many former Umno presidents left the party. From its founder Onn Jaafar to Tunku Abdul Rahman and also Hussein Onn," Mukhriz said.
Mahathir quit Umno on Monday in protest against party president Najib Abdul Razak's leadership. -Mkini
