YOURSAY | Here are the reasons why the Saudi royals have no cause to be fuming mad.
Commentable: The Saudi royals have no cause to be fuming mad. Why? Because:
1. PM Najib Razak didn't accuse them of anything, he only borrowed their royal name in an endeavour to clear his own scandal.
The Saudi royals didn't lose a dime in this instance - in fact they gained more, by being painted as generous donors, completely FOC (free of charge).
2. There is no reason to make diplomatic enemies out of this episode with Najib - in fact, the Saudis know Najib will owe them big time if they keep quiet.
3. Was US President Barack Obama fuming mad when Najib used Goldman Sachs as part of his grand scheme? Was he not treated as VVIP in his recent US trip?
So then what is your point here, BN communications strategist Abdul Rahman Dahlan? That the Saudi visit is conclusive proof that Najib is innocent and the case is closed? Or that the rest of the world need not continue with their investigation?
FairMind: Why should the Saudi king be mad with Najib? First, Najib credited him as an over-generous philanthropist and acknowledged leader of Muslim brotherhood.
Moreover, Najib has committed Malaysia to send its sons and daughters to fight their war in the bid to gain "invaluable desert warfare experience" while theirs spend their time safely with their families.
Wait till the first Malaysian sons and daughters come back in body bags and see what will be the Malays' opinion towards Najib.
Kim Quek: Simple logic: If the Saudi royal family had made the ‘donation’ to Najib personally as claimed, wouldn’t the Saudi government have been only too happy to say so, as a return favour to Najib sending Malaysian soldiers to potentially fight a Saudi battle?
After all, it wouldn’t cost them a cent to do that, wouldn’t it?
Versey: Abdul Rahman and Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang, it would be more convincing if you could get the Saudi king to issue an official letter acknowledging the donation in black and white, and carbon-copied it to the Wall Street Journal to prove all that you said is the truth.
If the donation were truly from the Saudi king, and since it's not something that could bring shame nor embarrassment to his country, and having strong ties with Malaysia, surely his royal highness would be more than willing to do so for Najib, right?
Abdul Rahman, ever since Lester Melanyi was caught lying about Sarawak Report and the minister who supported him had shown himself time and again not of a very dependable disposition, you know, it's very difficult to convince the thinking public unless the evidence comes straight from the horse’s mouth, and inked in black and white.
Malaccan: By the same token, when PM shook hands with the Israeli PM, he wasn't fuming either. So we should also assume that our PM is the best of buddies and brothers with his Israeli counterpart in the fight against IS too?
It would be better if our PM got the Saudi royals to confirm the donation. But our PM didn't get that, did he? He didn't get a statement by the Saudi royals to confirm anything even remotely near to that.
Instead he goes on this quest to convince Malaysians to read what is not said. He is embarrassing in his desperation to be patted on the head by the Saudi royals.
Meanwhile, Malaysians must wonder if he is there to ask for further handouts seeing the next GE will be coming soon and promises to be an even harder fight than the previous one.
Odin Tajué: I was - and still am - so impressed at the logic displayed by Abdul Rahman and Tan that I was unable to breathe for some four minutes.
My IQ being hovering somewhere at the bottom, such a deduction, of course, never occurred to me till hearing it from them.
Oh, and I never knew until now that the US$681 million transferred into Najib's personal bank accounts was a donation from King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud. I thought Allah had dropped it from somewhere up there for his Chosen One.
That idea, to my feeble mind, is far more awesome.
Vijay47: I am somewhat puzzled by Najib's cloying gratitude to the Saudis - "for their support over several decades". I don't recall having heard or read anything at all about this Saudi unmatched generosity of support.
It looks like Najib has pulled out all the stops in his glowing appreciation of the unheard of good deeds of the Arabs over several decades. Hey, when your head is on the chopping block, licking a few boots may be just what the doctor ordered.
Malaccan: Why should the Saudi royal family bother about the lies that may or may not be told by a politician to his own countrymen?
It’s no skin off their noses. Especially if, as it is widely believed in Malaysia, that the money actually came from within the country, and to some extent benefited Saudi nationals?
No doubt, the PM's trip there is to be seen as though he has the support and the goodwill of the Saudi kingdom. The way he has been ingratiating himself to the Saudi royals would turn the stomach of a mountain goat.
But he convinces no one as to his claims on the 1MDB imbroglio no matter how desperate he or his ministers appear to be.
SusahKes: So, what does a picture of two men sitting together in a room prove? Pictures don't mean a thing here, facts do. And here are the facts:
1) The Saudi foreign minister denied that the money was a donation. In effect, his revelation exposed Putrajaya's bluff, which kept saying otherwise.
2) The identity of the ‘donor’ is yet to be revealed. And even if it is finally revealed, isn't it a little too late to win over our affection? You think we would buy your next concoction?
What makes you think the above picture signifies that all is rosy? I can show you happy pictures of OJ Simpson and Nicole Brown. For all that we know, the Saudis could be telling themselves, "This chap's in our palms now."
Negarawan: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts that Saudi will be bankrupt in a few years’ time.
Perhaps they would be in need for ‘donations’ as well in the years to come. The two brothers could prosper each other: You ‘donate’ I, I ‘donate’ you. -Mkini
