The police do not need anyone to tell them how to do their job, said inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.
He was responding to Umno Youth exco member Armand Azha Abu Hanifah, who had asked the cops to arrest Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah and National Human Rights Association chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan.
"He doesn't have to tell us what to do. We know what to do.
"We know our duties and our job, so nobody needs to dictate to us what to do.
"That applies to all, not only to him," the IGP said in a press conference after officiating the launch of the smart library at the Pusat Latihan Polis in Kuala Lumpur today.
After the arrest of the red-shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos, Armand had told the cops to be fair and arrest Maria and Ambiga as well, because he claimed they had also committed acts of provocation.
He also claimed that Bersih had carried out their convoys without permit.
Jamal was arrested yesterday and remanded for two days under Section 500 and 503 of the Penal Code for defamation and criminal intimidation, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act and Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act.
This was over the incident in Sabak Bernam, which saw a clash between the red-shirts and the Bersih convoy, as well as a Facebook posting vowing that the Bersih 5 rally would see a repeat of the May 13, 1969 race riots.
However, Jamal denied he was behind the posting, claiming that it was made by a purportedly fake account.
The IGP said that the police will investigate Jamal's case thoroughly, as they received many reports against him.
Jamal was released from police custody this afternoon at around 4.45pm, where he was greeted by some 50 supporters clad in red T-shirts.
Meanwhile, Khalid said he did not have any updates on the investigation into Gerakan Merah leader Mohd Ali Baharom, who is more well known as Ali Tinju.
"We will let you know later," he said.
Ali Tinju had been arrested last month after he purportedly threatened Maria, though he was released on bail soon afterwards.
He had reportedly warned Maria that she "may no longer walk this earth" (tidak akan berjalan di atas bumi) following her announcement that the Bersih 5 rally will be held this Nov 19.- Mkini
