Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron claims the Council of Rulers has rejected the Citizens' Declaration petition initiated by Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his allies.
According to Berita Harian, Idris said he knew about this because he had accompanied Malacca governor Mohd Khalil Yaakob to the council's meeting last week.
"The meeting at Istana Negara had rejected the Citizens' Declaration, which ostensibly secured a million signatures calling for Najib Razak's resignation as prime minister, on grounds that it was against the Federal Constitution which stipulates the election of national leaders through elections," Idris was reported as saying.
The Berita Harian report was based on Idris' interview with Melaka FM during a segment titled 30 minutes with Idris Haron.
The Council of Rulers had met last Friday to elect the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
During the meeting, a group of people had gathered in front of Istana Negara to urge the rulers to look into current affairs.
Khairuddin Abu Hassan, who is among the key activists promoting the Citizens' Declaration, was among the group.
The Citizens' Declaration had sought the intervention of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the continued reign of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, amidst the 1MDB scandal.
Mahathir, the chief architect of the document, had submitted 1.2 million signatures to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to support the petition.
The former prime minister had claimed that the rulers and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong were constitutionally obligated to intervene. - Mkini
