One of Dr Mahathir Mohamad's often repeated diagnoses is that the Malays suffer from amnesiac spells. But this is now used to describe his recent actions, which have been labelled as treacherous to Umno.
Even Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak chose to recall the phrase "Melayu Mudah Lupa" in launching a salvo against his former mentor-turned-nemesis.
However, in his latest blog posting, Mahathir appears to have revised his diagnosis and suggested that the ailment is confined to those in Umno.
"The Malays in Umno forget easily, like how I mentioned during the previous Umno general assemblies.
"This time, they have forgotten their love for the nation, country and religion. Now, they think money is king and they worship money," he wrote.
Mahathir claimed the misappropriated funds would be shared among Najib's supporters in the coming general election.
"In other words, Umno members who continue to support Najib would be considered to be in cahoots in causing billions in government funds to disappear.
"Go ahead and take illegal money - money from selling race, religion and country," he said in a stinging criticism.
Mahathir appeared to be referring to the 1MDB scandal, which the US Department of Justice said at least US$3.5 billion was misappropriated from the Malaysian fund and laundered through the US financial system.
