New RM25 mil market to replace Pasar Besar Melaka

State authorities say damage to the present building is mostly technical in nature.

MALACCA: The partially-damaged Pasar Besar Melaka in Peringgit will be demolished to make way for the construction of a new market, estimated to cost RM25 million.

State Housing, Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Ismail Othman said the decision was made after taking into account the facilities available in the area, such as the Melaka Sentral Terminal.

He said based on a preliminary report on the Pasar Besar Melaka by the Public Works Institute of Malaysia (Ikram), the damage to the present building was mostly due to technical faults.

“The new market will be built once we receive Ikram’s full report and after action has been taken against the contractor concerned,” he added.

He said the new market would be equipped with modern facilities, and traders operating at the Pasar Besar Melaka at present, would be relocated to the new building. - FMT
