An opposition MP has questioned Prime Minister Najib Razak's “deafening silence” over the US' withdrawal from the Paris climate change agreement, asking if it is related to the Department of Justice (DOJ) forfeiture suits.On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of the US from the agreement signed by 195 countries in 2015.
“Immediately, a number of world leaders responded by criticising Trump’s decision as well as to reaffirm their commitment to the Paris Agreement.
“Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron chimed in on the US decision, while China and Russia reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Agreement.
“But the silence, till now, from our prime minister, Najib Razak, is deafening,” said Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming in a statement today, citing Malaysia's response only came from Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar yesterday.
“Is Prime Minister Najib staying quiet on this issue as part of a larger strategy not to offend President Trump?” he asked.
Ong asked if the prime minister was more concerned about the fate of the DOJ suits and businessman Jho Low, whose links to the 1MDB scandal had surfaced in Singapore's courts.
Ong pointed out Malaysia was among the 30 countries that reaffirmed commitment to the Paris Agreement in Beijing in May.
Therefore, he said, the recent declaration from Trump “necessitates a response from the leader of our government, that is our prime minister”.
“Let us wait to see how long Najib maintains his deafening silence on this issue,” he said.- Mkini
