PLUS: Motorists driving against traffic due to human error

PLUS chief operating officer says adequate signage and barriers have been installed along expressways to prevent drivers from going against traffic.
Mohammad-Fuad-Khusairi-motorists-plusPETALING JAYA: PLUS Malaysia Bhd says the recent spate of incidents involving motorists driving against traffic flow on highways is not due to confusion over signboards or inadequate barriers.
PLUS chief operating officer Mohammad Fuad Khusairi said based on their investigations, the incidents were caused by human error, reported The Star.
He said PLUS recorded six such cases on the North-South Expressway (NSE) this year.
“We would like to advise highway users to obey traffic rules and signs at all times,” he said.
Fuad told The Star yesterday that “No Entry” signs had been installed at all interchanges to prevent users from entering the highway from the opposite direction.
“We have installed adequate signage and barriers along the expressway to stop drivers from going against traffic,” he said.
On Thursday, video footage of a car travelling against traffic along the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway went viral on social media.
“The drivers enter the wrong carriageways not because they are confused by signs or barriers,” said PLUS strategic communications head Mohd Nizam Ismail.
He said many of them drove on the correct lane, but then suddenly decided to make a U-turn and drive against oncoming traffic.
He cited the case of part-time model Ng Pei Ven who allegedly drove against traffic on the NSE and crashed her car, killing one motorist and damaging five vehicles in Butterworth.
“Missing an interchange can prompt drivers to make the abrupt switch,” he said, adding that it was not an issue of insufficient barriers.
“Drivers cannot enter the other side of the road because there are barriers in between,” he explained. -FMT
