Dr M, Orang Asli meet countered with cash, karaoke

A meeting between Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the Orang Asli community in Tasik Chini, Pahang today saw a poor turnout with just about 50 villagers attending the meet.
Locals told Malaysiakini that many of the 500 villagers had been lured away by government-sponsored events in the same area.
One of it was a cash handout of RM100 for each child studying at SK Tasik Chini.
"If you have five kids you get RM500, I only have one child so I only got RM100," villager Zamsari Nubi said.
Another villager, Muhammad Lazim said after the cash was handed out, they were then pulled away to attend a karaoke event some 10 minutes away.
When Malaysiakini visited the site, there were about 20 Orang Asli there.
Pekan Umno Orang Asli bureau chief Shaharuddin Ahmad said the karaoke contest was organised by the Kampung Gumum and Ulu Gumum village committees with help from Umno.
"The Orang Asli told us they didn't want to go to the Mahathir talk, so they asked us to organise something," Shaharuddin told Malaysiakini, when asked why the event was organised.
He said at its peak in the evening, some 200 Orang Asli attended the event and some of the good singers were given RM50 each.

"We gave it for fun, whoever sang well got the money," he said adding more were expected to attend the event tonight.
"If only 50 people were at the Mahathir event, it shows which event was more popular," he said.
Shaharuddin rubbished assertions by some that the Umno and the government only did the event to clash with Mahathir's visit to Pekan.
"We do programmes for the Orang Asli quite frequently. From 2013 until now we are actively serving the community," he said.
Shaharuddin also explained that the RM100 handout for SK Tasik Chini parents today was only a coincidence.
"The cash aid is from the district education department. All schools in Pahang get it. Even my children got it.
"Maybe for this school (SK Tasik Chini) the aid came a bit late," he said.
Earlier in his speech to the Tasik Chini Orang Asli, Mahathir promised that Pakatan Harapan would listen to all the communities problems and try to fix them.
He also promised to address their concerns over the degradation of Tasik Chini (below) and also the matter of the Chini dam which the Orang Asli want destroyed.
Shaharuddin, however, said it was Mahathir himself who was to blame for the dam.

"Who built this dam? It was during his time that the dam was built. He built it but now he wants to demolish it?" Shaharuddin posed.
Salong branch Umno chief Zaki Samad said the BN government already had a comprehensive plan to rehabilitate the Chini lake.
He said there was a special area plan which among others would make the lake water drinkable by October this year.
"It is a work in progress, and there are two committees, including from the Energy, Water, and Green Technology Ministry, working on this and we have already met five times," he said.- Mkini
