DAP wants the Foreign Ministry to reprimand a PAS lawmaker who urged the government to classify the US as a terrorist country.
Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh (above) made the call while debating the Foreign Ministry's budget in Parliament yesterday.
Zawawi said this while criticising the US and Israel over aggressions against Muslim countries.
"Malaysia's stance must be firm. We don't say that Palestinians are terrorists, but we say that Israel is a terrorist country. So is the US," he said in the Dewan Rakyat.
Zawawi added other countries that threaten nations not aligned with them are also terrorists.
Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Kamarudin Jaffar declined to comment on the PAS MP's call, only saying that Malaysia and the US have independent bilateral ties.
"If there is any action by any country that we are not satisfied with, we may give our views and comments.
"So there is no need to make a declaration on any country as a whole or in general," Kamarudin said.
In a statement today, DAP said while acts of violence must be condemned, Malaysia must remain objective and judicious.
DAP international secretary Teo Nie Ching said that declaring the US a terrorist country could have serious consequences on Malaysia's economy, as well as the lives of Malaysians living in the US.
"Pasir Puteh needs to be aware that his instigating words, as an MP and as PAS Ulama wing chief, can have detrimental effects on the country.
"At a critical time like this, perhaps it is wise to think of the Malaysians who have lost their livelihoods before putting the stability of our economy at further risk," she said.
Teo added that the Foreign Ministry must reprimand Zawawi for his "deviant foreign policy views" towards the country's second largest trading partner. - Mkini
