Wan Saiful: Data shows govt 'saved' more than 8,000 people

Now that Covid-19 daily numbers are in the 5,000 range, Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan said it was proof that the government’s Covid-19 response was working.

Wan Saiful said the Health Ministry had initially projected new daily Covid-19 numbers to reach 13,000 yesterday, if the movement control order (MCO) had not been implemented.

“The number of positive cases is down to 5,000. This is an important piece of data.

“It means that the measures taken by the government have saved more than 8,000 people.

“This data showed that the government’s strategies are working,” he said in a statement today.

Over the past seven days, the average number of Covid-19 cases was 5,746.

On June 12, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah revealed a SEIR model which projected the growth in new daily Covid-19 cases for the period of April 1 until June 30.

The prediction assumes a R-naught figure of 1.2 and projected that new daily Covid-19 cases would reach 13,000 by around June 14.

However, the R-naught has been falling gradually since peaking at 1.21 on May 23.

The SEIR model projections were not released regularly until recently.

In view of this, Wan Saiful proposed that every time new daily Covid-19 figures are announced, they must be compared with the previously projected numbers for context.

“Those who are familiar with statistical methodologies will be aware of the importance of comparing with a 'control group' in evaluating the effectiveness of intervention efforts,” he said.

On the government’s National Recovery Plan, Wan Saiful said Muhyiddin’s pledge to reopen Parliament in Phase 3 showed that the Perikatan Nasional government was committed to parliamentary democracy and the constitutional monarchy.

“The prime minister has made it clear that he wants Parliament to be reopened when the situation allows it. He has been consistent since the beginning.

“Now we have a timeline,” said Wan Saiful.

According to the National Recovery Plan, the economy will begin reopening in Phase 2 while Parliament and schools will reopen in Phase 3.

While target months have been set for implementation, progress through each phase will depend on whether all three conditions can be met.

Wan Saiful urged the public to support the National Recovery Plan and ensure that they are registered for vaccination.

He said Malaysia can only overcome the Covid-19 crisis if everyone did their part.  - Mkini
