After Putrajaya's climb down on EO, Najib wants Parliament motion prioritised

Now that Putrajaya has finally promised to have the emergency ordinances (EO) annulled through Parliament, former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak called for the motion on the annulment to be prioritised.

"Don't make it the last thing on the agenda. Allow it to be the first motion," Najib, who is the Pekan MP, posted on his Facebook today.

Earlier today, Putrajaya de-escalated tensions with Istana Negara by vowing to ensure the EO are annulled through Parliament during the September sitting.

As it stands, the Dewan Rakyat will convene on Sept 6. According to the current order paper, the sitting kicks off with the royal address, followed by four days of debates and two days of ministerial replies.

Tensions between Istana Negara and Putrajaya followed Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan's claim in Parliament on July 26 that the EO had already been revoked on July 21 by the cabinet.

Istana Negara, in a rare public rebuke, said Takiyuddin had misled the House and pointed out that there was no royal assent for the revocation because the Agong wanted Putrajaya to annul the EO through Parliament, as required under Article 150(3) of the Federal Constitution.

As if yesterday, the EO was still applicable as a man was charged in the Sessions Court in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, under Section 4(1) of the Emergency (Essential Powers) (No 2) Ordinance 2021 for allegedly spreading fake news.

Meanwhile, Najib said Putrajaya's latest U-turn was a form of mea culpa after insisting through a four-page press release on July 29 that it had followed due process in regards to the EO.

"Today, they are saying the (revocation) could not be fulfilled (earlier) and (now) it needs a motion (in Parliament) and later debated and voted on.

"This means that the eighth prime minister and Perikatan Nasional ministers lied (about the EO being) revoked and the four-page statement that day was a lie to the Agong and all Malaysians," Najib said. - Mkini
