Political leaders from Umno, Bersatu, PAS, MCA and MIC have congratulated Ismail Sabri Yaakob for being appointed the ninth prime minister.
The Bera MP is Malaysia’s third prime minister in four years.
The Umno politician is set to be sworn in at 2.30pm tomorrow.
In response, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan commended Ismail and offered him a seven-point checklist of sorts.
“Congratulations and alhamdulillah.
“Ismail Sabri: The Al-Quran and Hadis are to be your guides, balance the living and the afterlife, have a sincere advisor to guide you, make Umno and BN your struggle, respect your friends and opponents, restore Malaysia and ensure the welfare of the rakyat,” he tweeted.
Ahmad and Ismail were previously on opposing factions within Umno.
Bersatu supreme council member Mohamed Azmin Ali also congratulated his former cabinet colleague.
“Alhamdulillah. Congratulations Ismail on your appointment as the PM.
“I believe you will continue the effort of building a strong and credible Malaysia. Teguh kita, menang bersama (when we are strong, together we win),” he said.
Azmin’s party Bersatu similarly expressed confidence that Ismail will continue the good work of Perikatan Nasional.
The party also reiterated its conditions for supporting him as the PM.
“He (Ismail) is the candidate agreed upon by Bersatu and our friends in PN, based on the trust that he will bring the country towards stability to continue the efforts begun by PN.
“Bersatu prays that Ismail will continue to be guided by Allah in his responsibilities in leading the country in line with the constitution and governance that is based on integrity, transparency, separation of powers, judicial independence and a constitutional monarchy,” said the party’s information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan in a statement.
Joining the chorus was PAS, who hoped the latest appointment would put an end to political instability.
“We hope this appointment will end the political crisis that is happening and we can focus on helping the country recover in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“PAS calls on all quarters, whether leaders or the community, to respect this decision and appointment and further foster unity - which is the pillar to the country’s prosperity,” said the party’s information chief Kamaruzaman Mohamad on Facebook.

MCA Youth chief Nicole Wong
MCA Youth calls upon the incoming prime minister and cabinet to seize on this opportunity to implement Undi18.
In April this year, MCA Youth submitted a memorandum on Undi18 to the Election Commission [...] MCA Youth now reiterates the relevant demands as follows:
1. Before GE15, the policy to lower the voting age from 21 years to 18 years must be accelerated.
2. MCA Youth understands that the implementation of automatic voter registration requires cooperation with the National Registration Department. We, therefore, hope that the EC will provide a timetable for implementing this policy and a list of parties cooperating.
3. At least two youth representatives are required to become members of the EC to ensure that the voices of young adults are taken seriously. MCA Youth proposes that one of the representatives be below 21 years old; the other representative should be below 30 years old.
The formation of the new cabinet is an apt time to implement Undi18, as doing so will prove that the new cabinet values the voices of young adults and is willing to give them more voices and choices to accelerate the country’s democratic system one step further.
MIC deputy president M Saravanan
Congratulations to Ismail for his appointment as the ninth PM.
I believe he will act as a PM that unites government parties.
I hope he gives his best in the effort to combat Covid-19 and help the economy recover. - Mkini
