Covid-19 (Aug 4): Record 19,819 new cases and 257 deaths, new highs in Kelantan and Penang

 

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported a record 19,819 new Covid-19 cases and a record 257 deaths.

New records were also set for active Covid-19 cases and patients in intensive care. 

• Active cases: 210,522
• Patients in ICU: 1,069
• Intubated: 553

Most of the cases (10,810 cases; 54.5 percent) were detected through contact tracing, while 2,079 cases (10.5 percent) are associated with known Covid-19 clusters.

Another 6,907 cases (34.9 percent) were detected though other forms of screening, while the remaining 23 cases are cases imported from abroad (0.1 percent).

In terms of newly identified clusters, the number of new community clusters today exceeds the number of new workplace clusters.

This is a rare reversal of roles where workplace clusters usually make up the majority of new clusters.

Deaths

There were 257 fatalities today, bringing the death toll to 9,855.

The deaths are recorded in Selangor (91), Kuala Lumpur (74), Johor (25), Malacca (24), Perak (9), Negeri Sembilan (9), Kedah (8), Sabah (6), Terengganu (4), Penang (3), Kelantan (3), Pahang (1).

Of these, 51 cases have no history of chronic illness.

Overall, 21 of the deceased reported today have passed away before they could be brought to a hospital.

States

Today has also been a record-setting day for Kelantan (1,003) and Penang (867).

The increasing number of cases in Sabah, Johor, and Kelantan are particularly concerning, as these are the three least vaccinated states in the country.

Only 14.3 percent of the Kelantan population have completed their vaccination as of yesterday, while the figure is 12.8 percent in Johor and 10.7 percent in Sabah. For comparison, the national figure is 22.8 percent.

A total of 1,161 out of 3,796 clusters are still active. This includes the 35 new clusters reported today.

Of these, 20 new clusters are community clusters, 14 are workplace clusters, and one is associated with a religious gathering.
