Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu has been appointed as a special adviser to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin with the status of minister.
According to the Prime Minister's Office, the former Perak menteri besar would advise the prime minister on community relations and communications as well as socio-economic development.
Earlier, Perak Bersatu had denied the appointment, citing the absence of an official announcement. Faizal is the chairperson of Perak Bersatu.
Faizal, who is also the Tambun MP, has not responded to Malaysiakini's requests for comment.
Last December, he was removed as Perak menteri besar after losing a motion of confidence vote tabled against him in the state legislative assembly.
Of the 59 ballots cast, only 10 were in support of him.
Faizal was reappointed as menteri besar after the previous Pakatan Harapan administration he had headed collapsed following Bersatu's exit to form Perikatan Nasional.
The special adviser appointment comes hot on the heels of Muhyiddin's announcement that he would allow lawmakers to test his majority in the Dewan Rakyat next month.
This is after Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and a group of MPs from the party withdrew their support for Muhyiddin. - Mkini
