ALOR SETAR: A group of locals who banded together to help frontliners fighting the Covid-19 pandemic contributed 22 much needed beds, along with other items to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, here.
The group, which calls themselves Anak Keat Hwa, collaborated with the Lions Club of Alor Setar to contribute the items. They had also contributed RM50,000 worth of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the hospital last year.
Chairman of the group, John Ooi Chon Yean said the group realised that the hospital was facing challenging times due to an increasing number of patients infected with the virus.
He said the project to get the beds was initiated as the group realised the urgent need to get more beds for the hospital to accommodate patients warded there.
"We worked with the Lions Club here to get the beds, 100 cartons of mineral water and 14 cartons of biscuits for frontliners at the hospital," he said at the presentation of the items to Deputy State secretary Datuk Syed Shaharuddin Syed Abdullah yesterday.
Also present at the handing over ceremony was the deputy director of the hospital Wan Ahmad Fazli Wan Kamis.
According to Ooi, the group had also supplied essential items to over 50 families in Kota Setar, Yan and Kubang Pasu districts.
He said most of the families were affected by the restrictions placed due to Covid-19 and had lost their source of income. - NST
