I have nothing to do with RM1.3bil tourism project, says Sanusi

PETALING JAYA: Kedah menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has denied awarding a RM1.3 billion project to any company, stating the state government did not have the means to fund such development projects.

Sanusi said that the alleged “billion-ringgit tourism project” in Langkawi, was a racing circuit mooted and developed by Open Road Asia Sdn Bhd, a private firm.

“The racing circuit project was to be carried out by the firm in a joint venture (JV) with Permodalan Kedah Bhd,” he added.

Permodalan Kedah Bhd owns the land on which the project is to be developed.

Negotiations, he said, were between the two entities and not between individuals.

“The allegation by the Sungai Siput PKR member that a bankrupt was linked to the private company is a matter for the firm and has nothing to do with the state government.

“Any accusation that there had been an abuse of power in the awarding of the project is reckless and political propaganda,” he said in a statement.

Earlier today, Indrani Selvakumar lodged a report over the matter with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Putrajaya.

Sanusi went on to say that his administration has always been open to reviewing any proposal to invest in the state from private companies with the financial means and experience.

“We also realise that our achievements in attracting investors in the past year has led to jealousy among those who want to see us fail.”

In March it was reported that the racing circuit resort, which Sanusi described as a game-changer, would feature a track touted to be the “Nurburgring of the East”.

The project – which is expected to be completed in five years – would also feature a 4S car distribution centre, a vehicle garage warehousing facility, racing academy, sports hospital, housing projects and petrol stations. - FMT
