Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin pledged loyalty to Umno but admitted that he has a trust issue with party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
"I have a trust issue with the president. I can't trust this president," the Coordinating Minister for the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (NIP) told the media when visiting a proposed vaccination centre at the Iskandar Malaysia Studios in Iskandar Puteri today.
This was because of several actions taken by Zahid recently, he said.
In his capacity as Umno president, Zahid wrote a letter to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah stating that all Umno MPs supported PKR president Anwar Ibrahim as the next prime minister, according to Khairy (above).
"Then there was the issue of the recording of a conversation between the president and the opposition leader (Anwar), which he (Zahid) first denied and wanted to lodge a police report, only to later admit that it was genuine," he was quoted as saying by New Straits Times.
Zahid recently announced the supreme council's decision on the withdrawal of the party's support for the Perikatan Nasional government and Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.
"The president said it was made unanimously by the Umno supreme council. However, there are some MPs who are supreme council members who made a decision different from that of the council," Khairy said.
He added that he will remain with the current government and will make a stand when the Dewan Rakyat reconvenes sitting in September.
"I am still an Umno member and appeal for the party to wait until September and vote to ascertain the legitimacy of the government.
"I am still loyal to Umno so let me do my job, namely the vaccination programme. This is a question of people's lives so, as long as there is no vote, let me do my job," Khairy said.
Umno's split has deepened over the past week as Zahid declared the withdrawal of the support of 11 MPs for PN and Muhyiddin while party vice-president and Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob claimed that 31 MPs are backing the ruling coalition until September when a motion of confidence will be tabled.
Khairy was among the 31 MPs named by Ismail Sabri who would support PN until next month.
However, three MPs - Parit MP Mohd Nizar Zakaria, Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar and Baling MP Azeez Abdul Rahim - who were named by Ismail Sabri, denied that they supported PN. - Mkini
