Lenggong MP quits cabinet, cites loyalty to Umno

Shamsul Anuar Nasarah has resigned from Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's cabinet.

"In view of several decisions made by the party (Umno), I, as a loyal Umno member, hereby state my resignation as a cabinet minister," he said in a curt statement today.

He thanked Muhyiddin for giving him an opportunity to serve and the Umno leadership for nominating him as a minister.

Shamsul is a third-term Lenggong MP and was energy and natural resources minister in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) cabinet.

He is also an elected member of Umno's supreme council.

Shamsul said he will now focus his efforts on serving his constituents and working for the party.

His resignation came minutes before the Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi held a press conference after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting.

At the press conference, Zahid declared that Muhyiddin had lost majority support and this time, he furnished proof.

A total of 11 Umno MPs, including himself, stood in the press conference to renounce Muhyiddin, who is also the Bersatu president.

Zahid said the MPs had put their withdrawal of support for Muhyiddin in writing and have been submitted to the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.

Shamsul was not present at the press conference.

Zahid said some MPs could not make it and alluded that there were more who have renounced Muhyiddin, including from some from Sabah.

He said they too will put their withdrawal of support in writing soon which will also be submitted to the Agong.

Currently, the opposition command at least 105 MPs.

If combined with at least 11 MPs from Umno, Muhyiddin no longer commands a majority of the 220 MPs in the Dewan Rakyat, unless he can convince some opposition MPs to back him.

Umno has a total of 38 MPs but is split between Zahid who wants the party to quit the PN government and Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob who has tried to rally them in support of Muhyiddin. - Mkini
