PETALING JAYA: The Perak menteri besar’s move to ensure that all assemblymen receive equal allocations should lead to a “new and superior political culture”, said Sultan Nazrin Shah.

In line with a decree from Sultan Nazrin, Perak menteri besar Saarani Mohamad had announced an equal annual allocation of RM200,000 for each of the 59 assemblymen when tabling the state’s 2021 budget last December.

“The move pioneered by the menteri besar is a courageous one, setting a precedent in the state administration,” Sultan Nazrin said when opening the first session of the state assembly today.

“It may well be a small initial step, but this small step, if nurtured, will be the stepping stone to a new and superior political culture that is less confrontational in nature,” he said.

Sultan Nazrin said every member of the state assembly should “appreciate this new culture” by embodying a mature political spirit of teamwork and mutual respect, while also helping each other in the interests of the state and its people.

The Perak ruler noted that he had previously decreed that the state government set an example in minimising political disputes, stressing that agendas such as economic prosperity, state development and social well-being must be given priority.

He said all members of the state assembly were also invited to attend meetings of the district development action committee, district focus group committee and district disaster management committee, which have made it possible for them to formulate policies that meet the needs of the people more effectively.

Perak is the first state to introduce a ‘bubble concept’ for its state assembly sittings, where aside from the main hall at the state assembly, there are four additional spaces at the same level used for the sitting.

There will also be daily Covid-19 screenings for all involved in the sitting to prevent any potential outbreaks. -FMT
