Senators go to Parliament, express regret Dewan Negara postponed

Unlike yesterday’s showdown between the Federal Reserve Unit and MPs, a group of opposition senators were not met with many obstructions this morning as they made their way into the Parliament building.

They showed up to hand a memorandum to Dewan Negara President Rais Yatim after the Aug 3 to 5 special sitting was postponed.

According to the statement, which Malaysiakini sighted, they expressed regret over the postponement.

The 16 senators also urged for the emergency ordinances to be laid and debated in the Upper House.

“We regret that the Dewan Negara was postponed on such short notice.

“Many Dewan Negara members arrived in Kuala Lumpur early, since last Friday (July 30) to take Covid-19 tests to prepare to attend the special sitting [...]

“As Tan Sri (Rais) is aware, according to Article 150(3) of the Federal Constitution, the Emergency Proclamation and Emergency Ordinances not only have to be laid in the Dewan Rakyat, they also need to be laid in the Dewan Negara [...]

“Therefore we want to state our preparedness to obey Yang Di-Pertuan Agong’s decree that Parliament must sit and debate the emergency proclamation and ordinances as well as related matters,” they said.

When contacted, PKR senator Yusmadi Yusoff said 11 senators entered the Parliament building at 9:30am.

They included PKR senators Manolan Mohamad, Ismail Yusop, Ahmad Azam Hamzah and Yaakob Sapari.

The five DAP senators present were Suresh Singh Rashpal Singh, AN Kesavadas, Alan Ling, Lim Hui Ying and Adrian Lasimbang. Amanah senator Raj Munni Sabu also attended.

After entering, they later emerged and Yusmadi formally handed over the memorandum to Dewan Negara secretary Muhd Sujairi Abdullah at around 9:45am as observed by the media
