PETALING JAYA: MIC president SA Vigneswaran’s loyalty to Barisan Nasional has come under question after he called on the coalition to decide on a new leader to take over from current chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Umno veteran Shahrir Samad accused Vigneswaran of attempting to seize power rather hastily under Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s “scheme of things”.
The phrase refers to a leaked audio recording, purportedly of a Bersatu Supreme Council meeting before the political turmoil in February last year.
“So now the question arises of the MIC president’s loyalty in BN with Umno as its ally.”
On Thursday, Vigneswaran had requested an urgent meeting of the BN Supreme Council to discuss the current status and direction of the coalition’s leadership.
His request was made after the Registrar of Societies (RoS) had said that Umno’s Supreme Council had only a caretaker role after the end of its tenure on June 30, and could not make any substantive decisions.
Vigneswaran said that as Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was also BN chairman, “we are worried that any decision (by Zahid) will be considered invalid” and could be challenged in court.
He said BN leaders should meet immediately to determine which positions, including that of BN chairman, could be handed over temporarily to another party based on consensus among coalition members.
But Shahrir said the registrar had yet to send an official letter to the party, adding he had enquired about this last night.
“Yet, the MIC president got over-excited as he probably thought it was his best chance to show his love for Muhyiddin and Perikatan Nasional.”
Yesterday, Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan said assumptions should not be made about RoS’ decision on the status of Umno’s Supreme Council as any statement that the Umno leadership are only caretakers “has not been finalised yet”. - FMT
