KOTA KINABALU: An 81-year-old woman was behind the Rapak cluster which has left at least 42 people infected so far in Sabah’s rural Ranau district.

State local government and housing minister Masidi Manjun said the outbreak occurred from a gathering at a shop owned by the woman.

He said the woman frequented the shop before developing symptoms like cough, flu and chest pains since Aug 22.

“The index case was then confirmed positive for the virus at a private clinic the following day,” he said, in his daily Covid-19 statement today.

He added the woman then remained at home before receiving treatment the next day.

Masidi said contact tracing between Aug 31 and Sept 4 found 21 people infected before another round yesterday detected a further 20 people with the virus.

“In total, 42 people have been found infected including five new cases today,” he said.

Meanwhile, Masidi said 2,298 new daily infections were recorded over the last 24 hours in Sabah, which is 231 more than yesterday.

This pushed the cumulative infections in the state to 167,737, with 33,220 cases still active.

He said 4,995 of these patients are receiving treatment, with 1,729 at hospitals,3,188 at low-risk treatment and quarantine centres, 72 at temporary detention centres/prisons and six at private facilities.

He added that 184 patients are under critical care comprising 129 at intensive or repurposed critical care units and 55 at open wards. A total of 82 of these patients required respiratory assistance.

Masidi also said 3,154 new recoveries were recorded today, pushing the cumulative recoveries to 141,230 now.

He added that 22 deaths were recorded over the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative death toll in the state to 1,508. - FMT
